Why it is important to fight your traffic tickets

South Carolina law enforcement officers issue thousands of traffic tickets each year. While people may view them as minor annoyances, traffic tickets can wreak havoc if you accumulate too many points. You could end up paying higher rates for your insurance or even having your driving privileges suspended.

In South Carolina, accumulating 12 points can result in your license being suspended. Different driving offenses carry different point levels. A drunk driving or drug possession conviction will automatically give you 12 points and result in the suspension of your driver's license. Less serious traffic offenses can quickly add up as well. For example, if you are ticketed for driving between 10 and 25 mph over the limit, you will receive four points on your license if you are convicted for doing so.

A single conviction for reckless driving can give you six points against your license. There are a variety of different traffic offenses that can lead to your racking up points quickly. With the potential consequences, it makes sense to try to avoid getting the points on your license. If you simply pay your fine without negotiating for a lesser offense, you may find yourself paying higher rates or losing your license altogether.

If you instead choose to fight your ticket, you may be able to win a not guilty verdict at trial and have no points assessed against your license. In other cases, it may be possible to negotiate an agreement involving a guilty plea to a lesser offense that doesn't involve points accumulation.

At our law firm, we regularly help people to reduce or eliminate the points they receive for their traffic violations. If you want to learn more about how the points system works in South Carolina, you might want to review our page on the subject.
