Minors and drinking and driving charges

If you are a parent of a minor who has been charged with an underage drinking and driving offense in South Carolina, you are likely very worried and frustrated. For minors, the state treats drinking and driving more harshly than it does for those who are 21 or older.

You likely are worried about the possibility of your child losing his or her driver's license. Another potential collateral consequence that could happen if your child is convicted of driving and drinking while underage is losing his or her financial aid for college, including Pell grants, federal loans and scholarships. A conviction could also impact the future employment prospects of your child.

Another possible issue is the insurance rates for your child. If your child is on your automobile insurance policy, your rates could go up. A child who has separate insurance may experience higher rates as well as the requirement to get and maintain an SR-22 insurance certificate for a set period of time.

At our firm, our attorney has experience as a former police officer and prosecutor. He brings his extensive background in traffic law to the table when he defends against allegations of underage drinking and driving. Because he understands how prosecutors and police officers build cases, he is better-equipped to build strong defense cases for his clients. Our attorney has experience with working in both the juvenile justice and the adult criminal judicial systems, and he understands what is at stake for his clients. If you have questions about what you might expect with your child's underage drinking and driving case, you are invited to review our page on the subject.
