Woman flees accident scene with tree embedded in car

Facebook users in South Carolina have helped pictures of an alleged DUI incident go viral. Police in Roselle, Ilinois, originally posted the pictures in order to discourage drinking and driving, and sources report that as of March 4, they had been shared more than 19,000 times.

The incident occurred on Jan. 23 at approximately 11:10 p.m. It apparently began when a woman collided with a tree in the neighboring town of Schaumburg and then left the scene, taking the tree with her. A witness observed the Lincoln Town Car with a 15-foot tree embedded in its front grill traveling southbound on Roselle Road and notified local police.

The vehicle's front air bags had been deployed and that the woman smelled of alcohol when a responding officer approached the car during the subsequent traffic stop. According to reports, the woman told police that she remembered hitting the tree in Schaumburg but was uncertain of exactly where the collision had happened.

The woman is now facing a drunk driving charge after failing a field sobriety test. Although this incident may seem to have a humorous side, South Carolina motorists may want to remain aware that a conviction on DUI charges could have serious consequences, including hefty fines, an automatic driver's license suspension, increased insurance premiums and possible incarceration. In some situations, a criminal defense attorney may be able to successfully challenge the results of field sobriety tests, which could lead to a reduction or dismissal of the charges. If it is a first offense, the attorney might be able to strike a deal with the prosecutor that would involve community service and alcohol awareness classes in lieu of a harsher penalty.
