Former USC football star facing drug charges

A former University of South Carolina running back was handed several criminal charges on Sept. 18. The former USC football star and a woman were taken into custody at their apartment in Lexington County. According to a statement from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, the couple was under investigation for one month prior to the incident.

A sheriff's department spokesperson said that the man and woman were both taken into custody without incident after agents executed a search warrant at their home. Both of the accused individuals received drug trafficking and drug possession charges. They were also charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, unlawful conduct toward a child and possession of a stolen weapon. Three children living in the apartment were placed in protective custody, and the couple was held at Lexington County Detention Center.

From 2003 to 2005, the accused man was a star running back for USC. In 2014, he received criminal charges for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a firearm and driving under the influence. It is unclear whether the woman living with him had any prior drug charges on her record.

A person who has been charged with drug-related crimes following a traffic stop and an ensuing search and seizure may want to have representation from an attorney. An attorney may be able to look for problems with the search that could render the evidence that was seized by authorities inadmissible in court. If key pieces of evidence are suppressed, the prosecution may not have a strong enough case to justify criminal charges.
