States with the highest rates of drunk driving

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a report following its national survey on the number of times that people drove drunk in the 30 days prior to being asked. In South Carolina, the agency found that 663 of every 1,000 people drink and drive. Although this was on the higher end of the spectrum, the state did not have the highest drunk driving rate.

This data was based on the 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. The researchers determined that about 4.2 million people, which is about 1.8 percent of the national population, drove drunk in the prior 30 days. This calculates to 121 million cases of drunk driving in one year. The same year, more than 10,000 people were killed in car accidents that involved drivers with blood alcohol concentrations higher than the legal limit.

The CDC collected survey data from 46 different states. The state with the highest number of people who drink and drive was Hawaii with 995 out of 1,000 people doing so. Close behind were Nebraska with 955, Montana with 885, Vermont with 881 and North Dakota with 855. South Carolina was 15th on the spectrum. The state that ranked the lowest at 46th on the list with just 217 drunk drivers out of every 1,000 people was Utah. Preceding the state were New Mexico with 273, Oregon with 285, Arizona with 300 and Virginia with 308.

Like every other state, the legal BAC limit in South Carolina is .08 percent. Law enforcement officials can conduct a traffic stop and perform a Breathalyzer test if there is cause for them to believe that the driver is under the influence. Drivers who are charged with such a violation could seek guidance from criminal defense attorneys on how to get the charges dropped or reduced.
