Woman driving with flat tire nabbed for drugs in South Carolina

A 34-year-old woman was arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop in Indian Land on March 2. Officials from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office said she was pulled over when narcotics officers investigating drug crimes in the area observed her driving with a flat tire on Barberville Road.

Officers claimed that they smelled marijuana when they approached the defendant's car. A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up marijuana, a small amount of methamphetamine, prescription drugs, an open container of alcohol, smoking pipes and scales. She was also found to be driving without a valid operator's license. She was arrested and taken to Lancaster County Detention Center where a correctional officer searched her and allegedly found a large amount of crystal meth in her possession.

The defendant, a resident of Monroe, North Carolina, was charged with methamphetamine trafficking, possession of a schedule III narcotic, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of ABC law and driving without a license. She was denied bond.

Those charged with drug trafficking in South Carolina may face severe consequences if they are convicted, including incarceration, probation and heavy fines. A defendant facing drug charges may wish to retain the services of a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. Having legal representation present during police interrogations could help a defendant avoid making statements that may be used against them in court. An attorney could also examine the case for weaknesses or any indication a defendant's rights were violated by authorities during the search that led to the alleged discovery of the drugs, which could lead to a dismissal of the charges.
