South Carolina man charged with impersonating an officer

According to Lexington police, a 33-year-old man from Columbia has been arrested for impersonating an officer on Jan. 6. The details that led up to the event included an investigator who worked with the Richland County Sheriff's Department reaching out to the Lexington Police to assist with a case. The county investigator was familiar with a former sketch of the 33-year-old.

A victim confirmed that the man was the correct suspect after locating him during a photo identification lineup. Police took him into custody at his home and charged him with one count of impersonating a law enforcement officer. He is awaiting a bond hearing and is currently at a Lexington County detention facility.

It is unclear why the individual was impersonating an officer or what details were involved. Police have not indicated what the victim of the impersonation experienced, and it is likely that the investigation is ongoing. The police department has also not indicated if he was wearing a uniform during the time of the incident. During the investigation process, police may try to identify if there are any other witnesses that saw the man to help them with the case.

In this particular situation, a criminal defense attorney might be interested in knowing if the individual had any prior convictions related to the charge he received and might also take a close look at the allegations that led to his arrest. This information might be useful in establishing if a plea negotiation or reduced charges are a possibility. Whenever an individual faces criminal charges, the defense attorney's strategy will most likely be to buffer any long-term consequences on behalf of the accused person.
