5 people detained on drug charges after searches

Police in South Carolina took five people into custody on Oct. 6 after searches of two homes in Goose Creek led to the discovery of drugs and firearms. Berkeley County Sheriff's Office reportedly executed two search warrants after a purchase of cocaine base was made during a controlled buy. The BCSO Drug Enforcement Unit reportedly seized controlled substances and 25 firearms in the operation.

The defendants, who range from 20 to 45 years of age, all received drug charges. Among the accused individuals, a 45-year-old woman was charged for simple possession of marijuana, possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and trafficking cocaine. A 39-year-old man is wanted for the same charges as the woman, but investigators have not been able to locate him.

A 21-year-old man in the group received charges for simple possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute cocaine base. A 25-year-old man and a 35-year-old man were both charged for distribution of cocaine base, and a 20-year-old man was handed a marijuana possession charge. All of the accused individuals were booked at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center while awaiting their bond hearings.

When executing a controlled buy, police officers may not always follow proper protocol in their effort to secure evidence. A criminal defense attorney could help a person who has been charged for drug crimes after a sting operation by presenting evidence of unlawful police actions. If a lawyer can prove that the officers were guilty of entrapping the defendant, the charges may end up being dropped.
