Woman faces DUI charges after crashing car

Authorities have reportedly charged a 23-year-old South Carolina woman with driving under the influence following an incident in Spartanburg. Sources allege that the woman had a blood-alcohol content of .17 percent when she was taken into custody, which is well over the legal limit of .08 percent.

According to the Spartanburg Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on June 27. The woman is said to have been found in a crashed car about 100 feet away from Powell Mill Road in the vicinity of Jesse Bobo Elementary School. Evidence taken from the scene indicates that she may have struck a fire hydrant before her vehicle came to a stop.

Officials observed smoke trailing from the woman's vehicle and three flat tires. She is believed to have crashed in front of the elementary school.

Charging someone with drunk driving typically requires evidence that the defendant was in fact intoxicated at the time of the incident in question. While police in the field often rely upon preliminary alcohol screenings such as breath tests and field sobriety tests to make determinations of culpability, these screening methods may be inaccurate in cases where physiological or environmental factors inhibit their results. For this reason, DUI defense attorneys often seek to ascertain the nature of the evidence against their client so they may contest if possible.

Being convicted of a DUI charge can have serious consequences for a person's reputation and professional pursuits in the long term. Since the penalties for DUI tend to become more severe with each subsequent conviction, the aid of an attorney could prove useful.
