South Carolina woman accused of DUI, injuring two officers

A South Carolina woman faces DUI charges after being involved in a car accident that injured two North Myrtle Beach police officers. According to police, just before she hit the officers, the 34-year-old driver ran a red light. The arrest report also states that the woman collided with another car in the crash.

According to authorities, after the second car was struck, it collided with a police cruiser, which caused injury to a police officer's leg. The first car then reportedly continued forward and hit another officer. The impact, according to police, caused the second officer to fly approximately 15 feet onto a nearby sidewalk. The car continued moving forward and reportedly rolled over the officer's legs.

Following the crash, the 34-year-old woman allegedly got out of her car, leaving the officer's legs pinned underneath it. Officers say that she then tried to hide inside some bushes approximately 30 feet away while the first officer went over to the woman's car and backed it off his colleague's legs.

Officers then arrested the woman and charged her with drunk driving. At this time, both officers have been released from the hospital after receiving treatment for their leg injuries.

South Carolina residents accused of drunk driving leading to an injury-causing car accident can face stiff punishments -- including years of jail time, probation, community service and loss of driving privileges -- if convicted. This is why if someone is accused of drunk driving, particularly in an accident that involves injuries or a death, it is important to have legal guidance and support to help ensure that the facts are accurately presented and that the defendant's rights are protected in the justice system.
