Man facing felony DUI following fatal crash

A South Carolina man is facing a felony DUI following an accident that claimed the life of a teenager thrown from his car on June 15. According to highway patrol officers, the charged man was also ejected from the sedan when it struck a guardrail on Interstate 26 East. Sources say that the driver and his fatally injured passenger were both transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment following the crash, but the 16-year-old female later died.

The single-car accident happened six miles south of Woodruff at approximately 12:50 a.m. According to reports, the 23-year-old driver swerved off of the interstate and quickly re-entered, veering across the roadway and into the right-side guardrail. Neither the driver nor the decedent were wearing seatbelts when the incident occurred. Preliminary reports indicate that a second passenger escaped the accident without injury.

At an initial hearing on the day of the wreck, the case was referred to the Spartanburg Circuit Court. At press time, a bond hearing had not yet been scheduled in that court. However, because a potential conviction for felony drunk driving charges could carry significant, life-altering penalties, the driver charged in this case may want to seek the advice from a DUI defense attorney without delay.

The attorney could assess a driver's legal situation and help them determine their best course of action based on the unique circumstances of the case. Through examination of the evidence, the attorney may find that law enforcement officials violated required protocols while taking the driver into custody or gathering chemical evidence which could lead to a dismissal of the charges. Alternately, the attorney may be able to successfully negotiate a plea deal that could result in a reduction of the charges and the penalties associated with them.
