Drug crime cleanup could be the largest in state history

Two South Carolina residents have been arrested for allegedly maintaining a methamphetamine manufacturing operation in Kershaw County. Official reports show that the pair was taken into custody on Easter Sunday after an anonymous complaint was submitted to the Kershaw County Sheriff's Department. The complainant had alleged that the pair, a 44-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were committing a drug crime by cooking meth in an area home.

Officers say that the two defendants have prior arrests for drug violations, though those involved narcotics. The couple is still being held in the Kershaw County Detention Center while they wait for the outcome of a bond hearing. The pair had reportedly just been evicted from the home when officers executed a search warrant. They were arrested while attempting to drive away from the building. Investigators report that in addition to the meth lab located in an outbuilding at that house, the couple may also have been maintaining a mobile meth lab in their car.

This is the sixth methamphetamine operation to have been identified and shut down in Kershaw County alone this year. Officers in the area tell reporters that they are committed to shutting down meth labs within their jurisdiction. That means that more people could be facing drug related charges as task forces and investigators work to identify meth manufacturers and distributors. Authorities say that drug crime related to the manufacture of meth continues to be a problem throughout the area and even the entire state of South Carolina. Investigators say they are dedicated to rooting out those who are manufacturing meth in the area.

Officers say that cleaning up a meth lab is an expensive task, though this particular example may take the cake. This operation, in fact, may have set the record for amount of toxic waste, with cleanup estimated at $10,000 - $12,000. It is not clear whether the defendants could be required to repay the state for the cleanup if they are convicted on the drug related charges.

Defendants who are charged with these types of drug crimes are often portrayed in the media as guilty before there has been a trial. In addition to facing significant penalties, defendants may also face problems at work, home and in their social lives. Criminal defense attorneys protect defendants' rights and work to build a strong defense against such charges.
