Teen accused in fatal DUI crash

A teen driver is facing criminal charges after allegedly causing a crash that killed a pregnant woman in Greenwood County, South Carolina. The driver, age 17, was allegedly underage drinking and driving at the time of the fatal wreck. The 17-year-old defendant is facing charges of felony driving under the influence in connection with the crash.

Authorities report that the collision occurred on Sept. 27, when the teen driver's vehicle struck the victim's 2006 Chevrolet. The driver of the Chevy was injured in the crash, but the decedent was apparently a passenger in that car. The 21-year-old decedent was pregnant with her first child, a boy, which she had already named. Further, an adult passenger who was in the vehicle with the teen driver was transported to area hospital facilities. Two other juveniles who were in that vehicle were not injured.

The collision happened at about 11:40 p.m. that evening, when the two vehicles collided on Highway 225 in Greenwood. The decedent was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities in the case have publicly admonished the young driver, even though he has not yet been subject to a fair trial or other legal proceeding. In fact, the driver has only been charged; no other legal action has taken place. Still, police officers have told media outlets that the driver's decision to definitely drive drunk effectively murdered two community members.

In this case, the young man should be given the opportunity for a fair legal proceeding before he is convicted in the court of public opinion. News reports have not given details about the driver's blood alcohol content at the time of the wreck, for example. No matter what type of charges the young man is facing, he deserves fair representation in the courtroom and in the media. Qualified defense attorneys can help protect this type of defendant's rights in court.
