Myrtle Beach officers crack down on drinking

Authorities in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, are reportedly cracking down heavily on underage drinking as the summer season continues. Underage drinking is a significant problem throughout the region during breaks from school, as the town fills with vacationers younger than 21 who are seeking alcohol. Now, a special enforcement team is being used to prevent youngsters from drinking and subsequently harming themselves in wrecks or other tragedies.

The officer in charge of the special task force said law enforcement is not on the street with the goal to arrest youngsters, but rather to educate them about the dangers of underage drinking. The team has, in fact, made a significant impact on their community, driving down the numbers of various alcohol-related crimes among juveniles. These associated crimes may surprise you; from burglaries to sexual assault, several categories have dropped by as much as 50 percent since the task force was implemented.

Alcohol has directly affected many of these officers' lives, with some explaining that several of their friends have died because of alcohol-related accidents. One man says the most difficult day of his professional career involved explaining the treatment of an underage drinker to her parents. The young woman was found naked on the beach, with her clothes strewn about, after she was assaulted by an area predator.

Officers are working together with other community groups, including the property management firms that own rental properties, to prevent underage drinking in the community. An underage drinking citation does not have to impact your child's future forever. An arrest for underage drinking does not mean that he or she will be found guilty. Consider seeking the services of a qualified criminal defense attorney. These professionals know how to navigate the court system, providing you with the advice and information you need to make the best decisions for your child. You do not have to face the courts alone; instead, consult a qualified attorney today.
