Rapper arrested for DUI, other moving violations

High-profile rapper DMX has been arrested in South Carolina on suspicion of DUI after an encounter with Greenville County law enforcement. The entertainer, also known as Earl Simmons, has an embattled criminal history with a variety of charges related to drugs and driving offenses.

Authorities report they received a call about a vehicle that was being driven erratically on July 26. The South Carolina Highway Patrol pulled DMX over in his Plymouth station wagon. He was given a breathalyzer test. The man was not only charged with DUI, but he is also facing allegations that he was driving without a license and failing to wear his seatbelt.

Additional reports show that DMX was released from custody about one hour after he was booked during the early-morning hours. This information is consistent with the general rules governing drunk-driving cases. Defendants are usually released quickly because they have the right to obtain independent blood-alcohol content analysis before their body metabolizes the substance. This also gives the defendants an opportunity to consult an attorney as quickly as possible. News reports do not indicate whether DMX has already enlisted the help of a qualified lawyer.

The entertainer recently released his seventh studio album, but most of his press has been related to his latest criminal escapades. He was charged in February with driving without a license, but his attorney was able to help the rapper avoid jail time. Instead, DMX only paid a fine in connection with that case. Prior to that, the artist had spent a significant time behind bars because he had violated probation for driving without a license. Other past driving charges were related to his 102 mph trip through a suburb in Arizona.

Having a criminal history like DMX does not necessarily make you guilty of a crime. If you have been arrested for DUI, you are not necessarily on the road to conviction. Consider seeking the services of a qualified criminal defense attorney who evaluate your case, helping you understand more about your legal rights and responsibilities.
