York driver gets eight years for fatal DUI

A young man from York, South Carolina, was sentenced to an eight-year prison term in connection with a fatal accident caused by intoxicated driving. The man mounted a criminal defense against the accusations by pleading guilty. The 20-year-old was accused of killing his girlfriend when he got behind the wheel after smoking marijuana and drinking. The accident also injured two other victims.

The defendant was formally charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death. He also faced two counts of driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury and driving under suspension. He will spend eight years' time in a state prison, after which he will be subject to five years' supervision and counseling. Authorities report that the defendant will also be required to pay $6,000 in restitution. He had faced a potential 22-year sentence, but his decision to plead guilty seems to have significantly reduced that punishment.

Authorities report that the accident happened on July 24, 2012, when the then 19-year-old driver and some friends helped his girlfriend move. When they were done moving, they drank some beer and then went into a secluded, wooded area, where they smoked marijuana and drank more. Even though passengers reportedly pleaded with the driver to slow down, he ended up crashing the vehicle while traveling about 20 mph over the speed limit. The driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a grove of trees. All four vehicle occupants were ejected.

The other two victims in the crash sustained serious injuries, including long-term pain from spinal trauma. The youngest victim, a 16-year-old girl, suffered from a collapsed lung and several broken bones that have made it difficult to move one of her arms.
