Ways to avoid a ticket, courtesy of an ex-officer

A former big-city police officer went on network television and advised drivers how not to get a ticket ever again. The officer gave residents of South Carolina and throughout the United States tips on how to avoid a traffic citation. He gave several ideas, such as:

• Don't consider the menacing look on the officer's face as a threat. Instead, recognize that officers are fearful when they approach a car. They don't know what awaits them, such as if the person in the car has a gun. Keep hands on the dashboard where the officer can see them.

• People should interact on a friendly basis with the officer. When the officer tells a driver what the infraction was, the driver should react professionally and in a calm demeanor. Ask any follow-up questions now. While women can get away with crying, it does not always work, the officer said.

• Watch your speed. A good rule, the officer said, is to drive less than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

While there are many other tips and ways to avoid a ticket, drivers still tend to get a heavy foot while on the road and speed. Additionally, some drivers tend to be disrespectful to officers. That is not ,as the officer cautioned, a good way to deal with the police.

It is imperative every time a driver gets behind the wheel that all the tools, such as license and registration are prepared. Do the other things officers will look for, too: strap any children into booster seats, make sure all passengers have seat belts on. Following all the driving rules certainly will help to show an officer that you are responsible and perhaps made just one error.
