Son of S.C. candidate jailed on drug charges

The adult son of a candidate for sheriff in Chester County, South Carolina, has been arrested on drug-related charges.

The candidate's son, 27, was one of two men arrested in Rock Hill, the largest city in York County, South Carolina. Drug agents working in the county said they arrested the candidate's son as the delivery of a kilo of cocaine arrived at a house the man allegedly had broken into to await the package. The cocaine was valued as much as $100,000.

The second man, who had stayed outside the house, tried to flee but was captured by police.

Prosecutors charged the candidate's son with trafficking in cocaine as well as second-degree burglary, officials said. He has a record dating to 2004 and has previous convictions that include drug trafficking, weapons charges and drug possession. An official with the South Carolina Department of Corrections said the man was incarcerated in 2007 for cocaine trafficking and was released June 29. He was on probation at the time of his arrest.

The candidate said he has not seen his son in a decade and doesn't have a relationship with him. He said he's disappointed in the choices he believes his son has made since he moved to Rock Hill to live with his mother. The candidate said that he had raised his child to know right from wrong.

The candidate said it is unfortunate that adult children sometimes make the wrong decisions where drugs are concerned. He said that he and other parents cannot alter how their children lead their lives as they reach adulthood.

The candidate is a former agent with the State Law Enforcement Division, U.S. Marshal's Task Force and the SWAT team, and he said he has always aggressively fought drug use and would continue to do so if elected. He is seeking the seat while running against the incumbent sheriff.
