Man charged with DUI after S.C. accident

A 25-year-old man will face charges of felony DUI after he allegedly was involved in a car accident that left his 27-year-old passenger dead.

The accident occurred in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Law-enforcement officials in South Carolina said the driver has a lengthy history of traffic issues. With one prior DUI arrest on his record, the man also has attended traffic school on two occasions and also was involved in 18 other traffic offenses, according to police records.

The man was driving a Chevrolet Camaro, and the Camaro hit a median and then wound up in a tree on Kings Highway at 48th Avenue North, according to police, Officials also added the man likely was speeding before losing control of the car. It is unknown whether the passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

Police said another car could have been involved in the incident as the Camaro appeared to be traveling with a second vehicle, which has not been identified.

The Camaro driver was being held in the Myrtle Beach Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The man's driving record shows the vehicle infractions began when he was 18. He has been charged with a variety of offenses concerning not wearing his seat belt, speeding, failure to obey a traffic device, improper lane change and DUI.

Although the man has spent time in traffic school, should he be found guilty, that may not be enough this time to prevent further accidents from happening. It may be possible for the defendant to take part in a rehab program to curb his drinking and driving. He is a prime candidate for such a program and could benefit from intervention before any other form of punishment could take effect.
