South Carolina woman faces first DUI charge

Police in Bamberg, a town about 70 miles south of Irmo, South Carolina, arrested a 21-year-old woman for alleged drunk driving, driving with a suspended license and allegedly failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. According to arresting officers, they observed the woman driving erratically and making multiple "radical" driving corrections. One of the corrections, according to an officer, nearly struck a patrolman that was standing on the side of the road.

Upon stopping the vehicle, the arresting officer stated he smelled alcohol and noted the woman's eyes were apparently bloodshot. When he asked if the woman had been drinking, she replied that she had a couple of beers. Officers then administered a field sobriety test, during which she allegedly sang her ABC's and danced.

Officers found the woman, who had a driver's license in a different state, was driving with a suspended license for failure to pay multiple traffic citations.

A search of her vehicle allegedly yielded several open bottles of vodka and a plastic cup that officers believe held alcohol. A woman that stopped at the scene claimed that she had been with the woman that officers were arresting, and that she had been drinking heavily before leaving in her vehicle.

Officers reported the woman attempted to leave the patrol car while being transported to jail by trying to climb through the window. According to officers, the woman was charged with her first DUI, despite having a record of multiple traffic citations. The woman was held in jail for observation due to what officer's believed to be a high level of alcohol in her system.
