South Carolina assistant principal facing DUI charges

A month after being charged with domestic violence in a case in which she was the alleged aggressor, sources say that a Summerville High School assistant principal is again facing criminal charges, this time for an alleged DUI. According to Dorchester County deputies, the woman was taken into custody on Dec. 20 following a traffic stop.

Reportedly, the woman was stopped by officers with the Summerville Police Department on the date of the incident. Witnesses had reportedly called police after finding the woman asleep in her vehicle. Upon waking her, witnesses told police the woman then drove away.

Summerville officers then reportedly tried to catch up with the woman, who apparently tried to flee. Law enforcement officers stated she was traveling at a speed of only 25 in a 55 mph zone, merging into oncoming lanes as she left the city's jurisdiction. Upon finally pulling over, the woman reportedly initially refused to get out of her vehicle. When she did, she apparently submitted to roadside sobriety tests, which police reported she failed. The assistant principal then refused a breathalyzer test and was charged with DUI. She reportedly told officers that she had a few beers and indicated that she had drank more than she should have.

Even in cases in which the same defendant is charged with an offense in more than one type of case, it is sometimes possible for a criminal defense attorney to negotiate a favorable plea that settles all of the individual's outstanding criminal charges. In the event a person who has no prior criminal history appears to have a substance abuse problem leading to their interaction with the criminal justice system, an attorney may be able to negotiate treatment in lieu of a jail sentence. Those who are charged with criminal matters may benefit by consulting with a criminal defense lawyer regarding their options.
