Former athlete faces drug possession and DUI charges after crash

Following a Nov. 4 traffic accident, law enforcement officials took a former University of South Carolina football player into custody on multiple charges, including DUI. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at approximately 4:50 a.m. on Cromer Road in Lexington. It was a single-vehicle wreck, reportedly.

The former football player was allegedly driving with multiple bags of crack cocaine. Moreover, law enforcement officials claim that the officers who searched the man's vehicle discovered a gun for which the man does not have a permit. The weapon was reportedly a 40-caliber Taurus handgun.

Besides DUI, the man is facing charges of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of a weapon. Reportedly, the man posted a bond of $7,000 and was released from police custody.

When facing a group of serious criminal charges, the first and foremost step shrewd individuals take is to consult with a defense attorney. Because the state takes an aggressive approach toward both DUI and drug-related offenses, it is oftentimes necessary to contest the charges with earnestness and resolve. In many ways, formulating a through, multi-pronged defense with the counsel of a criminal defense lawyer constitutes the best chance accused individuals have at avoiding the consequences attached to DUI and drug-related convictions.

The defense attorney may attack the prosecution's case from a variety of angles. In the event that law enforcement officers employed a breath or blood test to measure the accused driver's blood alcohol content level, the defense lawyer may question whether the evidence was contaminated or otherwise corrupted during the chain of custody. Furthermore, the defense lawyer may scrutinize the police's investigation techniques for errors and improprieties, the presence of which may invalidate the evidence collected by those investigators.
