Fatal crash leaves driver facing felony DUI charges

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a married couple died and five additional people were injured in an accident in Seneca on Sept. 6 in which alcohol is believed to be a factor. Following the crash, a 52-year-old Westminster man was charged with two counts of felony driving under the influence resulting in death.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. on U.S. 123 at Sheep Farm Road and Wells Highway. Sources report that the man broadsided the deceased couple's car after running a red light. One witness said that she was stopped at the red light on the highway when the man's truck sped past her into the intersection. Three other cars were subsequently involved in the wreck, and five occupants of these vehicles were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

As the crash investigation continued, the allegedly intoxicated driver appeared at the Oconee County Detention Center on Sept. 8 where a judge set bond at $100,000 in addition to 60 days in jail on two outstanding bench warrants. The man is expected to appear in court again in October.

The consequences of a felony DUI are potentially severe and can negatively impact an individual's life if convicted. Irmo residents who find themselves in a similar situation may find it beneficial to take immediate steps to protect their future. A criminal defense attorney might be able to evaluate a client's legal position and devise an effective DUI defense strategy, which may possibly lead to a dismissal or reduction of the charges.
