20-year-old man charged in fatal South Carolina DUI crash

Authorities are investigating a fatal car crash that took the life of a 17-year-old girl. Police say that the young woman died after a 20-year-old driver in a Chevy Equinox crashed into a Jeep Compass along River Road on Johns Island. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. on a recent Saturday.

The 20-year-old male driver was also injured in the collision and required hospital treatment at the Medical University of South Carolina. The young woman who lost her life was driving the Jeep Compass. Unfortunately, her injuries were so severe that emergency responders were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office charged the 20-year-old driver with underage possession of an alcoholic beverage and felony DUI. As of Aug. 18, he was being held on bond of $100,475.

The girl who died was a high school student, enjoyed French and was a part of her school's National Honor Society. She also participated in soccer, horseback riding, piano and like most girl's her age, loved spending her free time at the beach with friend.

This accident is no doubt a tragedy for all parties involved, and this does not exclude the driver who police allege was inebriated at the time of the crash. Although it is still to early to tell, the driver could also face a charge of DUI manslaughter depending on the results of police investigations.

South Carolina residents who are accused of drunk driving, DUI manslaughter or other serious traffic violations must keep in mind that they will have the right to defend themselves against the charges in court. Indeed, all individuals accused of crimes will remain innocent of the allegations until -- and only if -- a court of competent jurisdiction proves them to be otherwise beyond reasonable doubt.
