South Carolina second worst for traffic citations, deaths

If you think that drivers on South Carolina roads just stink, you might not be wrong. A recent insurance report from the website carinsurancecomparison.com discovered that South Carolina drivers may actually be the second-worst drivers in the nation. The ratings were based on a variety of factors, including number of traffic citations for careless driving, drunk driving rates and fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles.

The report showed that South Carolina is replete with alleged drunk drivers. Further, fatal collisions are a significant problem on the state's roads. The analysis combined those two measures to determine the number of fatal crashes that involve alcohol; after that criterion was added, the state plummeted in the rankings. Further, it appears that more South Carolinians need criminal defense assistance for careless driving than in any other state in the nation. Careless driving can include distracted driving, according to experts.

So far, 714 people have died on South Carolina roads this year. That is a significant decrease, with rates dropping by 100 deaths at the same point last year. Traffic safety professionals and police officers credit an increase in enforcement campaigns for the changes to fatality rates, but they still have a long way to go. About 41 percent of traffic fatalities in South Carolina involve alcohol, for example.

As a consequence, lawmakers are pushing for higher penalties for drunk driving, enforcing stiffer punishment for those with multiple offenses. Those changes could prevent growth in the number of fatal alcohol-related car accidents. With those changes could come a renewed need for criminal defense attorneys who can competently defend a drunk driving case. These professionals can help DUI defendants learn more about their legal rights and responsibilities, helping them to maximize the outcome of their criminal cases under any potential new laws.
