South Carolina man charged in fatal DUI accident denied bail

A South Carolina man that authorities allege was driving drunk when he struck a motorcycle was denied bail by a court last week.

The DUI arrest followed a fatal accident that killed two and injured one on Highway 417. According to authorities, the man had two previous DUI convictions, which prompted the judge to deem the man a danger to society if he was released on bail.

The two people that were killed in the accident, a 20-year-old man and 17-year-old girl, were in the sidecar of a motorcycle driven by a 24-year-old man. Police say the arrested man allegedly struck the motorcycle at a "great deal of speed." They allege the man continued to drive for another 100 yards before coming to a stop.

The driver of the motorcycle was injured and taken to the hospital to receive medical attention. Police say the 39-year-old arrested driver did not suffer any major injuries as a result of the accident.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol pronounced both victims of the accident dead at the scene and arrested the driver of the car for allegedly driving while intoxicated. Police charged him with multiple felony DUI charges stemming from the two deaths caused in the accident.

Prosecutors asked a judge to deny bail for the man after identifying the two previous DUI charges, as well as another DUI charge still pending in Union County. Though the man has previous DUI charges, he is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
